California Kabobs

Some say Labor day weekend is the end of summer grilling, we say NO-WAY, keep on grilling and here is a great recipe to throw on the grill!!
ingredients
• 8  6-inch  wooden skewers
• 4  ounces  pearl white or red onions (about 16), unpeeled
• 1  14-ounce can  artichoke hearts, drained and quartered
lengthwise
• 12  ounces  medium-large shrimp, peeled and deveined
• 12    refrigerated spinach-and-cheese tortellini, cooked,
drained, and cooled
•    Lemon Tarragon Vinaigrette (see recipe below)
•    Radicchio or red Swiss chard leaves (optional)
•    Freshly shredded Parmesan or Romano cheese (optional)
directions
1. Soak skewers in water for 30 minutes; drain. Pour boiling water over the onions; let stand for 3 minutes; drain. Trim off root ends and gently press to slip off skins. Alternately thread onions, artichoke hears, shrimp, and tortellini onto prepared skewer. Set on oiled vegetable grilling rack, if desired.
2. Grill for 6 to 8 minutes or until shrimp turn opaque, brushing frequently with Lemon-Tarragon Vinaigrette and turning once. To serve, place over radicchio or red Swiss chard leaves and pass Parmesan or Romano cheese, if desired. Makes 8 servings.
Lemon-Tarragon Vinaigrette: Stir together 2 tablespoons olive oil; 2 teaspoons finely shredded lemon peel; 2 tablespoons lemon juice or dry vermouth; 1 tablespoon snipped fresh tarragon or 1-1/2 teaspoons dried tarragon, crushed; 2 cloves garlic, minced; 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper; 1/4 teaspoon salt; and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Makes about 1/3 cup.

HENRY LYNN

First off, let’s deal with this name I’ve been given. I am a girl cat! Of course, once you take me home, you can re-name me, but I’m getting a little ahead of myself.
They say I’m very pretty. Look at that white triangle on my muzzle; that little pink nose; and of course that tiny gray beauty mark just beside my nose. Beautiful and unusual; that is how I would describe my markings.
I was in my previous home since I was just a little kit, and I enjoyed being the only pet there. That is also what I am looking for in my next (and hopefully last) home. Also, please no dogs. I hate to be a cliché, but I am a real scaredy cat when it comes to dogs!
I enjoy being picked up and held. I’m pretty big for a girl, so some of the smaller volunteers have a harder time getting me out of a cage on the second level. Of course, you won’t put me in a cage at home, so that point becomes moot once I am adopted. I also like being petted, so if you are looking for a loving quiet only pet, I’m your girl. Come visit me at Animal Friends!

Cannonball Run, Garage-Girls Support Cris Summer Simmons

Usually on display in museums, private collections, or in Harley-Davidson dealerships, packs of antique motorcycles will leave their prestigious perches and hit the road, being put to the test during this grueling coast-to-coast pursuit as their riders navigate the back roads and byways of our great nation. Some motorcycles will be built specifically for this challenge in accordance to the event’s stringent qualifying rules. Many may not complete the ride and the drama will build as the course determines how many will, indeed, finish. Following along the paths of their forefathers, each of the riders and their machines will be pushed to the very limit as the procession rolls from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, to Santa Monica, California, during the two-week odyssey. One rider we are in awe of is Cris Summer Simmons a pioneer for women motorcyclists, we are hoping to keep you guys updated on her journey, Go Cris!!!!

Zumba

Ok, you have probably heard about it, but may have been too intimated to really venture in and take a class or learn more about it. So we decided to give Zumba a test run and report back to you. Woah, what a work out.  For some people working out can be crazy boring and we can agree with that, spending an hour on a treadmill isn’t the most fun thing you could be doing. The Zumba® fitness program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program that feels more like being out at a night club than working out in a gym. The Music is loud and fun and the people in the class are loving every minute of it. We recommend taking a beginners class to learn all the “steps” first, once you have the steps down the class is much more enjoyable, you’ll be able to keep up vs. trying to figure out what the hell the instructor is doing. We found a clip on youtube that shows some of the basic steps. Try it out, it’s defiantly fun and you’ll be burning a TON of calories….  just remember to balance your workouts and include weight training, after all muscle is what gobbles up fat!

Wild Mustangs

While planning for his most recent trips to Oshkosh and Sturgis, David Uhl sought to create a masterful piece that captured the essence of beautiful, unbridled American technology sprinting wild through US history.  Mission accomplished!
The majority of this painting was completed at the airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where most of the visitors to the gallery saw David’s work for the first time.  He was humbled by the number of compliments and wide variety of superlatives used to describe his work.
“Wild Mustangs” depicts an early 1940s Airfield, featuring a courageous female pilot jumping from one Mustang to a completely different type of Iron horse.  This breed of lady has no worries in kick-starting her trusty 1940 Knucklehead shortly after navigating the airways in her P-51 Mustang.
Signed and numbered canvas prints  are now available for purchase.  You can view the complete image and a cropped version below:

Sanuk It means Fun

Out of the blue we came across this company Sanuk, which means Fun in Thai.

The company’s goal is to provide creatively inspired yet thoughtfully designed products for the global outdoor community…mostly because they are  part of it.
Headquartered in Southern California, with interests from surfing to rock climbing this company strives to make products as much about funk as function.  We wanted to share these with you because one of the flip flops is the MOST comfortable flip flop we have ever tried on. It is called the Yoga Mat, because that is what it is made of. Once you slip your foot into this flip flop you will melt, we are not kidding when we say that. Check them out you gotta try ’em.

BRADY

This is Brady, aka Mr. Tall, Dark and Handsome. He’s a very sweet and affectionate boy who just loves people. In fact, he loves them so much that he has expressed his desire to be the only pet in a household. That way, he can be the center of attention with his new family. Never fear though, he has more than enough enthusiasm and affection for everyone and can easily handle the job of family dog on his own.
Brady has very good manners and would be happy to display his “sit” upon request. Of course, a small treat in exchange would make his day! He’s very intelligent and would like to continue his education once he leaves the shelter. Feel free to ask your adoption counselor for more information.
Brady would do best in a fenced yard. Being that he is a strong boy who has opinions about other dogs means that walking him in crowded urban areas isn’t always the most fun. In a yard where he can romp and run, he can cut loose and really enjoy himself. Add a few human siblings in their mid teens and wow, that’s going to be one hopping yard!

We know the perfect home for Brady is out there somewhere. Is it yours? Come meet him at Animal Friends!
